I decided to get creative with the pumpkins this year.

This should be a familiar face. I will always think of Mark Hamill as the Joker for the animated series.

This one isn't quite as familiar to those who don't know about SNAFU-Comics, and their resident artists. This one is of their take on the character of the Big Bad Wolf, a viscous creature that plagues Little Red Riding Hood's mental state. The amount of detail that was put into the panel I referenced was too high for the pumpkin fibers to handle so I dropped it down to 3 shades and white.

Started to get some concept work going for this thing a friend of mine and I intend to do. Started with weapon ideas, pulling from a few modern weapons and devices. The idea behind these weapons is that they only use pressurized are to create a concussive blast, similar to a shock wave, but far more compact. They are intended to be non lethal at lower settings, but capable of doing some serious internal damage when cranked to 11. Using only air pressure is proving something difficult to design around, but an interesting challenge arises from it.

Alright, so I was asked to do some color tests on a house to see what colors would look good on the outside. I took the original image with my cell phone, which then decided to make it tiny for some reason or another (its normally a larger image, but whatever). Anyway, two the two best shots of the front of the house and combined them to make the one below.

Where have I been? Gotta blow on this thing like an SNES cartridge. Anyway, no I haven't gone anywhere beyond the radius of my apartment and, on the occasional Wednesdays, the local pub to meet with game artists. However, the frequency of this is going to change, as I finally got a job! Right now I'm working from home since the office isn't quite ready to work in yet, but they tell me its just about ready.

I had one freelance gig back on the 12 for the company Syndrome Studios in Hollywood, rigging up a hand for the show/special called "The Voice" for CBS. Though it was for only a day, I kinda dug the place since it was on the top floor of a building looking out onto a park and the rest of the main city. Side note: Apple Bacon Quiche is freakin amazing. I must try to make it at some point.

Anyway, back to the job. The company itself is called The Film Group Inc, and its based out in Van Nuyes. That's not a short drive by any means, especially considering the freeways I need to get there, but I don't mind since the work is cool and the pay is good. I had also gotten contacted by the company Possible Productions to come and work on a project, but the project itself had been dropped, so they have me on stand by should another project come up that they can use me. I really hope I get called back in to work since the folks there were really cool, and the place their office is located is eerie as hell. You can hear people entering the building from the other end on the second floor! Some good acoustics there.

Anyway, thats about all to report for now. I'll report more when more comes up.

What to say, what to say. It certainly was a month. Birthdays passed and celebrations were had. Reacquainted with folks I once knew, job opportunites tried and others denied. To end things was to have my comp start to die, so now I need to find out if its the eyes, stomach, heart, or brains. Bad timing on its part, to say the least. Oh well, maybe now that its the Chinese year of the Rabbit, things will be on the up and up.

Did this as a bit of practice for someone. Used a pen and ink drawing as a base provided to me, and built it up from there.

At last, work from the company I'm at has come forth, though not quite as I expected. I was assigned to animate a portion of a story for a client, and was given the appropriate assets to do so. However, when I went to try out the character supplied, some stuff was out of sync and others were malfunctioning outright. I've been slowly fixing the character for the better part of the day, but I won't know what else to repair until my fellow co-workers tell me what they want repaired. Its not a total loss though, as I'm picking up a thing or two that I hadn't known about before this file. It can, and will be salvaged.

Meanwhile, I keep thinking about my test file I did for the company when I was on trial, and I want to fix her up a bit more. I'm not entirely satisfied with how I left it, so most likely, if and when I get the chance, I'll go back and refine it some more.

On a final note, a friend of mine posted a link to an amazing technical artist by the name of Chad Vernon. This man seems almost otherworldly to me, but at the same time, makes me want to work that much harder. Take a look at his amazing work at http://www.chadvernon.com/blog/.

South Park didn't happen, so that was a shame, but life goes on. In the time gap since the last artistic posts, I've done the following:

1) Rigged up a hexapod mech for a friend
2) Reworked some of the rendering for the Prowler car
3) started(and currently working on) a club scene slightly reminiscent of old clubs and music halls
4) Took a rigging test for a company(see below)

I'm currently in the running for a rigging position for a company called Marvimation. The main lead there is saying that I'm pretty much in, but the head rigger of the company has the final say, so I've still some waiting to do. Originally, I though I was going to receive an assigned character to set up and have evaluated, but the lead rigger never gave me the files. Meanwhile, in order to keep my skills on hand, I rigged up one of the characters they gave access to. That ended up becoming my test.

Less on business, halloween is drawing near, and as is tradition for me and the family, we're going to hand out candy, if the kids and adults are brave enough to get close to the house.

Well, its more of a trail run at this point. South Park, or rather the company responsible for the long running series, like what I had to show them on Tuesday. So today they called me back and said to report in for training next week on Tuesday. This isn't to say I have the job, but rather a test to see if I have what it takes to be a part of their team. I'll be training with two other people, so it'll be nice to see how other people work again.

The Air Elemental of my friend's game

This time the character is meant to be tall, thin, and fast. I thought back to Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender, in terms of how the airbender's were dressed, but thought about making this character more streamlined and lighter in appearance. I also gave him more of a cowl, since the character is meant to move at high velocities, and we all know that air doesn't exactly warm the face at high speed. I figured on the scarf and sash in order to indicate more or less his movement/ movement of air.

Changed the frock into a full on cloak. Weapon now has a less definitive shade/ looks more like smoke to indicate wind direction.

Arbiter concept piece - Vahn Kahr

Doing a bit of work for a friend. The project itself is called Arbiter: Chaos of Elements, so the character traits are derived from the elements of the game's universe.

First up is the Vahn Kahr: the earth warrior.

I wanted to structure some of his armor around wood and stone, so as to display a sense of solid, yet living structures.

Been some time since I updated this blog, so lets get to it.

First, a little bit of practice with good old fashioned pencil and paper.

Next, this was going to be an HDR image, but the temperature of colors shifted to much between images while I was compiling them, si I'll have to redo it, but at least this looks nice enough. Its actually the parking stalls outside my apartment. It doesn't look anywhere near this nice in real life.

Lastly, I already posted this on the other blog, but its still news. The Prowler is complete, so now I'm placing it over some still plates. This is the first in the series.

What little animation I had done for this project essentially got cut since there was quite the laundry list of issues with the scene. Oh well, such is life. Finally started to update the website with a new reel and some new icons. I'm going to work on a links section next to lead to my friend's sites.

Meanwhile, the Zoic project is almost done, and just needs a few more shots rendered and comped. As for the Prowler(the second car I built), its coming along nicely. I've hammered out some of the divisory lines and did some more mesh clean up so that it looks nice even in low poly. Heres to hoping all goes well.

A slightly faster update with a few updates.

To start, the face rig I mentioned is done. Not as many controls as I would like, such as the iris, but that will need to wait for another time.

The Panther(the cat) Rig is done with 2 sets of high poly geometry. The first is meant for maya, while the second is meant for lightwave, since my producer was going to render it in that program.

The Panther (the car this time) is set to be rendered on all counts this time, minus 2 shots that I need to set up cameras for. The last shot where it drives off is set though, and thats the one thats been bugging me for some time. The issue with the rendering, however, is still up in the air, so our animator and myself are attempting to fix the problem. I won't know if my fix works until the co-producer tries it at the company.

Finally, I put up the face rig and cat rigs up on my site, so who ever wants to view them can do so through there.

Another monthly update here. To start, my internship at Zoic has indeed ended, though on a note I wish it didn't, but such is life. They definitely like me and what I was trying to do there, and I got to meet a lot of cool folks there. My group still hasn't finished our piece, but we're closing in. We've been given an extension, but I'm still going to push to get done quickly.

Meanwhile, outside of Zoic, and California for that matter, I was offered a potential job for a company called Shadows in Darkness. This is a massive boost after recent events, since this is a major company that has worked for huge names in the game world. The job is to be a rigger, and they know I've focused on using maya, but in order to seal the deal, I need to have a facial rig. I don't have one. So I'm building one as fast as I can with the minimal experience I do have. Hopefully, things work out.

Hard to believe its been near a month. Anyway, to the post:

The internship is nearing its end, and although they haven't really said much of anything about who may or may not get hired on, I don't regret the time I've been there. A lot of cool people and a great atmosphere to be in, plus I got to meet other folks on different sets.

The actual project itself is almost done on my part. The cat is fully rigged and just needs to have the extra fixin's to make it an excellent feast. The finalized car is now in my possession and is being set up for use in the render pipeline. Meanwhile, from what I've been observing on the team group, the plates are just about set and some of the transitional elements are near done. Man I hope this goes over well.

Finally, I've been doing some other work for myouterspace.com, in terms of porting over the six ships that were built in lightwave into Maya, this way, me and my friend can properly use them to pose in different shots for the site. Not exactly easy considering that theres a huge amount of n-gons sitting in these things.

Ugh, after a fair chunk of time, I've finally got a new piece up on the main site. Labeled the PSX coop, its was a dropped idea from the Zoic internship. This is only one of two pieces I personally built and rigged. I'm currently finishing the second one, as well as rigging a third piece that I didn't build. its a feisty little chap.

On to other news, I'm now partaking in a trail run for a website called myouterspace.com. More on how thats going at a later date. Meanwhile, here in Irvine, I may take up another internship at a company called Crazy Pixel Games. I'll find out if I get it or not by the end of the week.

Been a bit over a month since I posted here, so here's a breakdown of the happenings. The project in itself has been working against me, as I've now been officially taken off the car. Apparently my idea of basing the car off existing cars, and the client's idea of basing it off existing cars are at odds with one another. In simpler form, client wanted a Maserati, I wanted a custom car that would stand out.

That makes 2 cars out, but 2 new pieces in. Now I'm placed onto rigging duty for the panther itself, which seems to be rather interesting.

Rendering out the first car, I learned how terrible the mesh really was. The windows had a lot of dips and the body was very bumpy as though someone hit it with a hammer. To add icing onto that disaster cake, 4 frames from every layer did not render, and I rendered in the wrong camera, so everything was too dark, and the shadow passes ended up being broken.

Now for the good news. I've two interviews this month. The first is tomorrow for a website called myouterspace.com. Its out in burbank, and I gotat be there by 1 pm. Yay traffic. The second interview is for another internship over at crazypixelgames.com. This time, its only 2 weeks long, and is, thankfully, here in Irvine.

I'm also considering on doing a brief guide on modeling cars from what I picked up from Jason for future usage.

After what seemed like months, the intern project is underway. Now I would love to post the pieces I work on up here, but due to a bit of competition amongst the intern teams, I'm gonna keep things on the down low until near the end of the intern session. The only way you'll be able to see the stuff is by either:

A) being a part of the team I'm on
B) being an employee over at Zoic that I frequent as they work (most likely my mentor)
C) be physically behind me as I work on the pieces themselves.

I can say that what I'm working on is mechanical of sorts.

Finally Something new

But not what you'd expect.
First off, I'm gonna strait up say that being at Zoic is awesome, but at the same time its like being in a fast moving current. Not to mention that running around on deliveries chews up gas like nobody's business. But I digress, still awesome.

Second order of business: I'm gonna start doing photo touch-ups/manipulations for some cash, as I'm more broke that a 5 year old's piggy bank. I've enough dough for my phone bill and possibly 2 tanks of gas, if I'm lucky, so its time to either A: sell stuff, which would take a bit of time, or B: Do commissions for photo cleanup. An example of what I can do is below.

It consists of basically a bit of clean up and a new background, minor stylization, plus a filter to sort of mesh the two images. I did this for free just to brush up on my photoshop skills. The price is negotiable, but I'll go as low as, say $7USD. Nothing like a lucky number right?

So no jobs yet, which shouldn't be surprising since it was just the holiday season. The internship at Zoic is gonna be hell on my car, since I already need to put gas again after just filling it up on the same day. This wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't so scrapped for cash. It doesn't help that I got a parking ticket. The people are nice at the company though, and a familiar face now works there, so things are definitely interesting. Though I still don't really think it, Zoic pretty much lives off its interns, since the interns are the ones doing a lot of the important things to help the company advance on its many, many projects. Plus we keep the people there supplied with food for everyone, and we all know how important food is.

Meanwhile, back in cg land, I've been trying to start the whole rendering process on the MK II, but I don't want to give up my tower to full time rendering again. As a result, I started work on some other little project, though I'm not sure what to do with it. Probably just gonna add to it like I did the MK I, which, I might add, I started doing a few more redesign concepts for in order to help get some juices flowing in my brain.

I've been accepted into the Zoic internship program. Huge leap forward in my career, though the full weight of this bit of information hasn't fully sunk in just yet.

Meanwhile, back in the cave, the first shot of the MKII is fully rendered. however, I still have another 4 shots to go, and 3 of them (potentially) need motion blur on them in order to make the fan system more believable. The campus render farm is looking better and better every minute.

Well, me and a few friends of mine have decided to create a game together. Thankfully, I don't have to do scripting since they understand that aspect far better than I do right now. At first I took it lightly, but the guy is dead serious and has the engine picked out and having the rest of the team playing with it right now. I won't describe details yet until we've got things a bit more solidified, but this aught to be something interesting for me to do.

Revising a sequence

Well, I'm sure many of us already realize that I've got no real animation on my site, so here's what I'm gonna do. The student project "Trash Me" has come to my mind again, and I wanted to redo a bit of the animation sequence I had worked on. Maybe clean up the animation a bit more and fix a few things with both the rendering and camera angles. I'll also do some fresh textures on some of the set pieces, since they didn't look as good as I had hoped originally.

Well, the main animation for the MKII is fairly set, though tweaks may follow later on for timing purposes. The Maya Fluids are fighting me the whole way, and generally, I've been uninspired for modeling projects as of late. However, amidst the ruble comes some sparks of life. Or in this case, an ancient light conversion devise comprised of crystal, semi elastic animal hide, and primordial glass magnifying lenses. I'll get to posting the sketch concepts later on, since I want to get a mechanism that enables the energy release. In the mean time, the MKI images have been uploaded to the main site and show some of the pipework, as well as the new console.

Slow progression, but a creative spike arrives

Its been a week and nothing really came to me, other than minor fixes. However, i've just got some ideas and made toe following modifications:

Replaced the rails with much thicker ones with a narrower particle slide in order to justify the cooling pipes that run along the outside.

In regards to the gunner's seat, I've added some things to help improve the safety of the gunner, and allow for idea expansion on how the gun's stats can be displayed.

The gunner's seat now slides back and rotates outwards, allowing for easier access into the control area, as well as for easier maintenance should a situation call for it.

Lastly, I've broken up the original controller into smaller portions for easier animating, if ever I use it for such.

A new idea that I may try is replacing the original foot pedals with movable arm slings, this way the gunner can move their legs into a better position and allow for more fluent control of raising and lowering the cannon. I'll throw up some comparison shots on the other blog when I get things a bit more organized.

It was a bit too dull and some of the overall flow did quite gel with me, especially now since I've opened it up again to look at it. I will have to ditch some of the particles in there, since they look horrid and I want to try to use the fluids system to give it a better appearance. Hopefully it turns out better than expected.

A new sketch set

The theme was the Alice in Wonderland series. I leaned more towards Through the Looking Glass, as not as many people are familiar with it. Each character is to have two styles for them. The lion only has one as the other is in progress. The initial theme is "Of Dreams and Nightmares". The first variants are to be more nightmarish, while the second set the dreams.

The lion. Originally combating a unicorn for the white king's crown, it is said that he is big and slow, and stupid, but the superior of the fighters.

The mad hatter's origins are that of intrigue. The phrase "mad as a hatter" stems from the fact that hats were once dipped in mercury to help cure the felt used in the hats. The toxic fumes eventually drove the workers and the hat's owners to lose their mind as a result of mercury poisoning. The Hatter in Alice in wonderland is constantly drinking tea because of the red queen. When he attempted to sing to her, she declared that his singing was so horrible that it "killed time". Being mad as he is, the hatter believed her and has since believed time to be dead.

The site itself is slowly getting to a better standard, and the reel is shaping up nicely. Still can't get that pesky rig to function just right, but its due to the geometry colliding in ways I hadn't predicted, so that's slowing things on the spartan. Meanwhile, the lip sync project from class is near done. just a few minor tweaks to the body movement and the mouth, and it should be good to go.

Its taken some time and a moment from the spartan, but I have finally got a reel compiled. Albeit its not fully rendered out and it has stills, not to mention that not everything I want is in just yet, but the idea is there and now all it will take is to finish the spartan rig and model, adjust the lighting on the scenes, add the wireframes, and put in the concept art. No big deal, since the vector render is fast and I would only be adding three lights per scene to give the models a better appearance. See my other blog for the vector render example. So In doing another compilation of the various armor pieces completed, I found that the legging set was colliding with the boots. Now I could just remodel the plates in question, but The problem with that is it would be cumbersome to me, so I'm gonna modify the current plates to bypass the collision point. shouldn't take long.

Thank god for that. I've 3 weeks to get more stuff ready, but really only 2 weeks and 2 days, as come 4th of July weekend I'm taking off elsewhere, where computer access is null. In short, must get more Spartan done, model out projector in some way, shape, or form, and decided on how the reel will actually look. At least the website was updated to include my concept art for the rail gun and Spartan, and I've got my new Icon set in my contact page. Let the good times roll.

A spark of inspiration

So while getting the last bits of things to place on my site that revolve around my demo reel, I decided to experiment with gears again, but making a gyroscope with them.

However, I liked the effect so much that I'm considering using it as my opening piece to the reel, albeit some modifications to give it a more intricate look. With that notion in mind, I decided to make all of the pieces like holograms during the reel, similar to those of the Star Wars hologram communicators.

Obviously it will be projected from below, but the idea is there. As such, I'll model out the projector module in order to prime the soup for the reel and get the spartan on his merry little way, now that I have a legging design that I like more.

2d Animation: questionable grounds due to lack of communication amongst the members of the team.
Production Team: On schedule, though rendering issues have arrisen with the occlussion pass.
Demo Reel:
-Rail gun needs a new render due to coloration changes.
-Bot needs to have a small idle animation created before turnaround will be done.
-Spartan needs finalized design on armor and main body needs to be completed model wise

So Friday has come again, and more things have appeared on my to-do list. So long as the 2d animation stuff gets dealt with, I won't have an issue. The Chimera is near completion, though zbrush is fighting me in terms of making normals for the body. Ah well, lets see what happens.

Yeah, I'm late. anyway, the bg department for the 2d animation is a bit scattered as to what we're to do, though now that a viable storyboard is done, we can create proper backgrounds. I still hate working on it, since it distracts me from my 3d work, which has fallen behind in schedule by my standards. Bah to it all, but work has to be done regardless of whether or not I like it or hate it. On another note, I really should be keeping track of what I've done for the 2d piece, so I'll do that now.

Week 1: Create the online group to help store various pieces to the project and discuss the script for the animation

Week 2: Create the wizard character and finalize what the story will have in it

Week 3: Help with deciding on what was to be a part of the storyboards and concept an innitial background

Week 4: Begin work on actual bg pieces, as it was decided to divide up the scenes to allow for reusability of the various props.

Week 5: Continue work on BGs, but now with a more reliable template from the finalized storyboards

Okay, so I have my own website now, but the damn thing doesn't format propperly in internet explorer. Normally, I wouldn't care since I hate using it and prefer using Firefox, but it needs to work in both browsers. Freakin sucks on all fronts, considering I've looked at the coding for the pages and theres nothing wrong that would cause the table shifts. Blarg. Anyway, I'm near done with my railgun project as seen on my other blog. (Hit my profile to locate it.) Meanwhile, I'm going to attempt to clean up another piece thats being used in an animation right now, in the hopes that it looks better than it does now. After that, my next project will be a variant on a Spartan(not from Halo, before you even start). I've already got some designs created for the shield and armor, though the sword and spear will need some refinement. On a final note, the 2d animation backgrounds are now being produced, so those will pop up here once they are completed(at least the stuff I make anyway).

The story behind this one is that I found a pic saying that the reason a cat dashes out of a dark room is that it was because of a failed assassination attempt on the person walking in.
